First session

Look through the free section of craigslist and pick a few ads that capture your attention. Come up with a poster advertising the goods on offer using only the words in the ad. You can rearrange and edit them however you like (it can be irreverent or absurd), but you can't add any text apart from what's in the original. You can look at the sections in places outside the Bay Area.

Make as many thumbnail sketches as you can. The source material is most likely to be extremely boring and unappealing—it is your job to make it interesting and enticing through your use of design, concept and typography. For the next session choose at least one of the ads and make at least three sketches for it. You can do several texts if each one has the three sketches accompanying them.

Second session

Take one of the sketches to the final. Like in the previous assignments, take your time to figure out the style and execution, making sure it does justice to your concept. Remember that text treatment is an essential part of the assignment, as important as the design and drawings. Consider how you want to treat it—via hand-lettering, digital type or a combination of both.

You will be judged on your text treatment as well as the concept/execution.
